The residency

The Bits to Atoms residency gives you 130 square meters of living and working space in Barcelona for one, two or three months, with access to software, hardware, digital fabrication tools, and the space to make things.

The program is aimed primarily at the CDFAM Computational Design Symposium community, people working across computational design, AI, machine learning for engineering, architecture and digital fabrication.

Residencies suit one person or a couple. The cost to rent the space is comparable to long-term Airbnb rentals in the area. There will be an interview process before a placement is confirmed, so both sides can check there is alignment on what you want to do and the intention of the program.

Computer + 3D software

Bring your own computer(s), and also have access to a workstation set up with 3D and computational design software, including nTop.

Fabrication

3D printer + laser cutter

3D print, laser cut and etch on site with additional digital fabrication tools being added.

Studio

Assembly Space + Tools

Plenty of open area and bench space to build, assemble, finish and test designs.

You have the entire ground floor apartment to yourself: lofted master bedroom with king size bed and dressing room, full kitchen with separate dining and living rooms, as well as a private courtyard, washing machine, and of course, the studio and its tools, all in one space.

Suitable for one person or a couple, no pets, no parties.

The Neighbourhood

EL RAVAL

The studio space is situated in a former upholstery shop on the ground floor of a 200 year old building in El Raval, the creative heart of Barcelona, blocks away from MACBA and the CCCB, Sant Antoni and Mercat de la Boqueria.

Dining options range from Pakistani and Filipino street food, to local Catalan Tapas and Mediterranean fine dining restaurants. You will also find Absinthe taverns, dive bars and high end cocktail bars nestled side by side with small stores selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to vintage clothes, secondhand furniture, air conditioners and, great coffee.

To the North you will find l’Eixample, with high end fashion boutiques, Gaudi’s architectural gems Casa Batlló and Sagrada Familia. To the East is the tourist heavy areas of La Rambla, the old Gothic Quarter and El Born. To the West lies Sant Antoni with markets and train lines to everywhere from the airport to the beach, and to the South, the more gritty part of El Raval unfolds and unravels at night.
